EMIF : quid ?

Where’s Brussels?
I finally got hold of ICCA’s top 20 for 2010. I haven’t yet managed the top 100, but I’m working on it. Well, what a surprise! Like in previous years, Brussels does not figure at all.

Congratulations, Germany: 12 points !
Whatever you think of the Eurovision Song Contest, and I admit I’m not a great fan; you have to congratulate Dusseldorf for the spectacular staging of this year’s event which confirms just how good Germany is at organising big meetings and events.

What’s in a name?
I am just back from Vigo. Where’s that? I hear you ask. No, not in Russia as a Belgian friend, who works in communication, thought when I told him where I was going. Nor is it the capital of any Eastern European country as my globetrotting half-Spanish daughter guessed, when she first heard the name. But she’s in Washington DC and has gone American, so she has an excuse!

Communication is getting harder…
Well, it certainly is here from where I am writing this PAGtour column. I’m in a small village in a rough land of pines, olive trees and almond groves in north-eastern Spain. No it’s not Catalonia… it’s next door in Aragón, some 100 km south of the regional capital, Zaragoza.

Why have a Brussels Meetings Week ?
This was the exact title of this year’s Brussels Meeting Week press release. And that is precisely the question I asked myself at the end of the latest edition in March, as I am sure many others did too.

VisitBrussels-Washington
Yes I’m still talking about Brussels, but this time it has an international dimension. At a good humoured event at EMIF 2011, in the presence of Brussels Mayor Freddy Thielemans, the bosses of Destination DC and VisitBrussels signed an alliance agreement to promote Washington, DC and Brussels as top meeting & convention destinations.

Visit Brussels, sized for april fool's
I had some interesting feedback on last week’s Brussels rebranded. Many commented positively on the barcode design and I certainly agree. In the elongated version, the new logo and its multicoloured stripes look even more attractive. It’s just the strapline-slogan which is causing the grief, and no-one who commented had anything complimentary to say.

Brussels successfully rebranded?
The institutional-sounding BITC has changed its spots and its name to the lighter VisitBrussels. It was obviously the safe option, but it would have been nice to see Brussels being a little more daring, creative, Magritte-like and adventurous, rather than adopting something that has already been around for the best part of 10 years. When you see the initials VB, you will now have to ask yourself...

EMIF earns itself one last chance…
Next year is the last chance for EMIF. Everyone has been saying it every year for the last 10 years. But this time it’s true. The new management team has won a reprieve and has another opportunity to show it can not only fulfil but exceed expectations of exhibitors and visitors alike.

TESTING TIMES FOR EMIF
First of all, I wonder how many PAGtour readers have heard of EMIF. I have never seen it mentioned here. EMIF, the European Meetings Industry Fair is aimed at anyone involved in conferences, meetings, events, incentive and business travel
